Royal Armouries (International) plc has been given the go-ahead to build Leeds’ largest conference and exhibition centre – plans were finally unveiled last night to show a £5m development located at Clarence Dock next to the Royal Armouries Museum.
Leeds Newest Venue, which is due to start in the next few weeks, will see the construction of a clear span exhibition centre covering 27,000sq ft which will increase RAI’s combined ground floor exhibition space to over 40,000sq ft.
Coupled with 5 galleries and the existing facilities for conference and banqueting at the Royal Armouries Museum, the development will offer a flexible solution to organisers of almost any kind of indoor event.
Chris O’Boyle, Chairman of Royal Armouries (International) plc said: “This is an extremely exciting period for the company. Regional leaders have been calling for a larger conference facility, and RAI plc is proud to be in a position to deliver it”.
Jim Vincent, Managing Director, added: “Demand for a larger venue has also come from major exhibition and conference organisers who already hold their events at the Royal Armouries such as the AC Lighting Show, which means that the project is seen as a giant step forward.
“RAI currently attracts 100,000 annual business tourists to over 500 events. The expanded offering will significantly increase these numbers and generate a more diverse profile of events and attendees. We look forward to welcoming one and all to Leeds!”
Leeds Newest Venue is scheduled for completion in April 2007, and on-site facilities already include a secure 1,650 space car park and a 130 bed Express by Holiday Inn with 700 more hotel bedrooms within a 5 minute walk.
Leeds Newest Venue is located in the £200million Clarence Dock development next to the Royal Armouries in Leeds. The development comprises a regional size casino, 1,100 executive apartments, bars, restaurants, office space and other leisure activities. It will be supported by Leeds’ hotel stock of 6,500 bedrooms, underpinned by a comprehensive network of motorways, rail links and a strong commuter airport allowing easy access from all major routes.
